סֻכֹּת Succot

Key Info: The Most High outlines his instructions about this feast three times, in Vayiqra (Leviticus) 23, Bemidbar (Numbers) 29 and Devariym (Deuteronomy) 16. The time of the festival fell in the autumn, when the whole of the chief fruits of the ground, the corn, the wine and the oil, were gathered in (Exodus 23:16; Leviticus 23:39; 15:13-15). Its duration was strictly only seven days (Deuteronomy 16:13; Ezekiel 45:25) but it was followed by a day of holy convocation, distinguished by sacrifices of its own, which was sometimes spoken of as an eighth day (Leviticus 23:36; Nehemiah 8:18). During the seven days the Israelites were commanded to dwell in booths or huts formed of the boughs of trees. The boughs were of the olive palm, pine, myrtle and other trees with thick foliage (Nehemiah 8:15-16). The First day is the Sabbath, and the last day is a Sabbath.

How to Observe

How do we observe/celebrate?

The Most High instructed Israel to live in makeshift shelters made from branches and palm trees to remember their time dwelling in similar booths in the wilderness. This tradition serves as a reminder of their past as slaves who were liberated from bondage and led to the promised land. The occasion is a joyful feast and a time for celebration and rejoicing. The first and last days are designated as special days of assembly and holiness. The first and last day are to be Holy Convocations (gathering).

Should we still observe these feasts?

YES.

In Vayiqra (Leviticus) chapter 23 we're told four different times that these feast days are to be a "statute forever, throughout your generations" (Lev 23:14, 21, 31, 41).
